JG Thirlwell is currently scoring Venture Bros Season Six. There is a expected to be a double episode special, based on the space station Gargantua 2, completed and aired this year. The remaining episodes will air in 2015. A Venture Bros Season Six teaser just posted by Adult Swim doesn’t give too much away, but you can hear some bits of the new music JG has written for the Gargantua 2 special episode.

freq_out 1.2∞(skandion)
freq_out 1.2∞(skandion) will be the first permanent freq_out sound installation. It will be installed in the small garden at the new Skandion Clinic for cancer treatment in Uppsala, Sweden, and inaugurated in the fall of 2014. The following artists will contribute to the sound installation : Tommi Grönlund / Petteri Nisunen, Mike Harding, Jana Winderen, Finnbogi Petursson, Anna Ceeh / Franz Pomassl, Jacob Kirkegaard, The Sons of God (Kent Tankred / Leif Elggren), BJNilsen, Maia Urstad, JG Thirlwell, Brandon LaBelle, Christine Ödlund, Permagnus Lindborg and artist curator Carl Michael von Hausswolff. The project curator is Lotta Mossum and project organizors are Tomas Nilsson and Akademiska Hus.
The Skandion Clinic is the first clinic for proton therapy in Scandinavia. Proton therapy makes it possible to treat cancer more effectively and with fewer side effects than with conventional radiation therapy. The clinic is located in Uppsala, Sweden and the first patient is expected to be treated in 2015. The clinic is designed at present for treatment of 1000 patients per year, but with an option of future expansion.

JGT Meets the Great Learning Orchestra
JG Thirlwell has been meeting and work-shopping with The Great Learning Orchestra in Stockholm, with a view to JG creating a major composition for them. When completed the piece would likely premiere in 2015. The Great Learning Orchestra is a network of a little more than one hundred musicians from different genres, cities and countries, meeting up to explore music with listening in the center. They are based in Stockholm, but collaborates with composers and musicians from all over the world. They have performed pieces by Terry Riley, Gavin Bryars, Lou Reed, Arnold Dreyblatt and many more, as well as performing a multitude of visual and instruction scores from a wide gamut of artists and composers. As their name suggests, they are structurally based on a model suggested by Cornelius Cardew‘s Scratch Orchestra.
JGT Piece at the Bang On A Can marathon
The annual Bang On A Can Marathon concert will take place on Sunday June 22 at the Winter Garden at the World Financial Center in NYC as part of the River To River Festival. At the concert the Bang On A Can All Stars will perform JG Thirlwell’s composition “Anabiosis”. This piece was originally commissioned by the Bang On A Can People’s Commissioning Fund in 2005 and performed by the All Stars that year. Subsequently JG Thirlwell rearranged and refined the composition for his Manorexia ensemble and performed it extensively. Further to this, a studio recording (performed fully by JG Thirlwell) was released on 2011’s Manorexia Dinoflagellate Blooms album. Moving full circle, JG has worked with Nathan Koci to integrate refinements developed in the composition from subsequent work into a new score for the All Stars, and this will be played at the BOAC marathon.
The concert will feature music by Louis Andriessen, Armando Bayolo, Jherek Bischoff, Carlos Carrillo, Bryce Dessner, Julius Eastman & Jace Clayton, Michael Gordon, Judd Greenstein, Brooks Frederickson, Molly Joyce, David Lang, Paula Matthusen, Marc Mellits, Meredith Monk, Andrew Norman, Caroline Shaw, JG Thirlwell, and Julia Wolfe.
The concert will feature performances by Adrianna Mateo, Anonymous 4, Bang on a Can All-Stars & friends, Bearthoven, Contemporaneous, Dawn of Midi, Great Noise Ensemble, Jace Clayton (aka DJ/rupture) & friends, Jherek Bischoff, Mantra Percussion, Meredith Monk & Theo Bleckmann, Roomful of Teeth and So Percussion.
The concert runs from noon until midnight and admission is free!
Venture Bros Season Five on DVD and BluRay
Season Five of The Venture Bros is out now on DVD and Blu-ray. The release feature all eight episodes from its fifth season, (one of which is a double episode), plus the bonus episodes “A Very Venture Halloween” and “From the Ladle to the Grave: The Shallow Gravy Story.” You’ll also find deleted scenes and episode commentaries from creator / director Jackson Publick and fellow writer, director and executive producer Doc Hammer.
JG Thirlwell is particularly proud of the scores he created for the show on season five, so keep your ears open as well as your eyeballs peeled.
JG Thirlwell and Lipstate hit Texas – plus JG chamber concert
The duo of JG Thirlwell and Sarah Lipstate, which debuted with a rapturously received set at The Stone in NYC on 4/16/14, will make its second appearance at the New Media Art And Sound Summit in Austin, Texas on June 13. In this project, Thirlwell plays synthesizers and electronics and Lipstate (aka Noveller) plays guitar through a multitude of effects.
In addition, on June 14 at the same festival, JG Thirlwell will present a program of his chamber works using musicians from Texas. The program will include both old and new works, including a world premiere, and will be played by a string quartet consisting of Alden Doyle (violin), Laura Poyzer (violin), Stephanie Phillips (viola), Jen Mulhern (cello), with the addition of Brent Farriss on contrabass on several compositions. Melvins and JGT seven inch David Bowie tribute
A seven inch tribute to David Bowie by Melvins will be released Monday April 14 2014. The lead vocal duties on both sides of the single are handled by JG Thirlwell. The tracks on the single are “Station To Station” and “Breaking Glass”. This limited edition of 500 on Amphetamine Reptile features cover art by HAZE XXL & Mackie. It’s on clear red vinyl with white splatters, and is already sold out. A longer version of “Station To Station” is available on the 2013 album Everybody Loves Sausages on Ipecac. The version of “Breaking Glass” is exclusive to the seven inch release.
Moog collective at Rough Trade NYC
On March 29 2014, JG Thirlwell will take part in Multiplex/DeMultiplex : An Evening of Radical Synthesis. The evening, curated by Gavin Russom, will feature with artists engaged in a collective improvisation on Moog electronic instruments. The participants are Sean Be, Tigga Calore, Aurora Halal, Jon Nicholson, Gavin Russom and JG Thirlwell. The event will take place in the Moog Music Installation at Rough Trade NYC, 64 N 9th street Brooklyn NY 11249. It runs from 7pm to 9pm and is free and open to the public.
JGT sits in with Elysian Fields
Elysian Fields are releasing ninth album “For House Cats and Sea Fans”. They are celebrating with a record release concert at Saturday, March 22 at Rough Trade NYC 64 N 9th St, Brooklyn. JG Thirlwell, who appears in the album, will be sitting in with them for the track he contributed to, “Escape from NY”. Also on the bill are The Aspiring Me at 9:00 and the legendary Melvin Van Peebles at 10:00. Elysian Fields hit the stage at 11pm.
JGT reads WSB
JG Thirlwell will take part in William S.Burroughs reading marathon presented by The Poetry Project as part of WSB100, New York’s month-long celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Burroughs, the iconic writer of Naked Lunch, Queer, Junky, and many other experimental works of great American literature. The event will take place at the sanctuary of St Marks Church in New York City, on April 23 2014, beginning at 8.30pm. JG will read with interpretive guitar accompaniment from Sam Mickens. Also on the bill are Anne Waldman, Bob Holman, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, Matt Mottel & Kevin Shea, James Ilgenfritz, Jack Womack & Elliot Sharp, Iron Dog, Nick Zedd, Penny Arcade, Simon Pettet, Steve Dalachinsky and many others.
