The Bang On A Can Allstars are headed to Australia, and they will be performing JG Thirlwell‘s “Anabiosis” composition in Sydney on August 25 2018 and in Melbourne on August 28 2018.
Bang On A Can commissioned Thirlwell to compose “Anabiosis” in 2006, and Thirlwell subsequently recorded his own version, which appeared on the Manorexia album Dinoflagellate Blooms. Thirlwell then adapted the piece for the Manorexia chamber ensemble. In 2015 Thirlwell reworked the piece for the Allstars, which by now had three new members in its ranks.
In Sydney, the Bang On A Can Allstars will perform as part of Extended Play, a 12-hour micro-festival that explores and celebrates new music in every format imaginable at the City Recital Hall. You may purchase tickets for the whole festival here, or just for the Bang On A Can Allstars performance here.
At the Melbourne Recital Hall, the Allstars will perform Thirlwell’s piece, along with pieces by BOAC founders David Lang, Julia Wolfe and Michael Gordon, plus a piece by Philip Glass. Tickets for the Melbourne concert here.
The annual Bang On A Can Marathon concert will take place on Sunday June 22 at the Winter Garden at the World Financial Center in NYC as part of the River To River Festival. At the concert the Bang On A Can All Stars will perform JG Thirlwell’s composition “Anabiosis”. This piece was originally commissioned by the Bang On A Can People’s Commissioning Fund in 2005 and performed by the All Stars that year. Subsequently JG Thirlwell rearranged and refined the composition for his Manorexia ensemble and performed it extensively. Further to this, a studio recording (performed fully by JG Thirlwell) was released on 2011’s Manorexia Dinoflagellate Blooms album. Moving full circle, JG has worked with Nathan Koci to integrate refinements developed in the composition from subsequent work into a new score for the All Stars, and this will be played at the BOAC marathon.
The concert will feature music by Louis Andriessen, Armando Bayolo, Jherek Bischoff, Carlos Carrillo, Bryce Dessner, Julius Eastman & Jace Clayton, Michael Gordon, Judd Greenstein, Brooks Frederickson, Molly Joyce, David Lang, Paula Matthusen, Marc Mellits, Meredith Monk, Andrew Norman, Caroline Shaw, JG Thirlwell, and Julia Wolfe.
The concert will feature performances by Adrianna Mateo, Anonymous 4, Bang on a Can All-Stars & friends, Bearthoven, Contemporaneous, Dawn of Midi, Great Noise Ensemble, Jace Clayton (aka DJ/rupture) & friends, Jherek Bischoff, Mantra Percussion, Meredith Monk & Theo Bleckmann, Roomful of Teeth and So Percussion.
