JG Thirlwell nominated for a Golden Reel Award

JG Thirlwell has been nominated for a Golden Reel Award. JG was nominated in the category “Outstanding Achievement in Sound Editing – Animation Short Form” for the Archer Episode “Cold Fusion” from Season 11, along with sound editors JC Richardson and Pierre Cerrato. The Golden Reel Awards recognize sound artists in 22 categories spanning film, TV, cartoons, computer entertainment and student productions.

JG Thirlwell commissioned by Decibel New Music Ensemble

JG Thirlwell has been commissioned by Decibel New Music Ensemble to create a graphic score for their 2 Minutes From Home project. In this project they commission two minute works for the Decibel Score Player, which is an app for IPad. The commissioned work is here, presented as a video performance showing the ensemble playing their parts in their homes together, alongside the score. Decibel New Music Ensemble will be publish 10 works throughout 2020 via their website and social media. Other composers in the series include Thembi Sodell, Gail PriestErik Griswold, Dan Thorpe, Jon RosePedro Alvarez, Dominic Flynn, Amanda Stewart, Cathy Milliken, Lionel Marchetti, Haruka Hirayama, Bergrún Snæbjörnsdóttir and Marina Rosenfeld.

JG Thirlwell exclusive limited art print #5 available now

We are proud to announce the issuing of the fifth limited edition silkscreen print by JG Thirlwell, entitled Vomoscape #5. This gorgeous art piece is a signed and numbered four-color screen print in Thirlwell’s signature palette of black, red, white and gray. It is printed on French 100lb cover paper, and is 24″ x 18.” which makes it easy to place in a standard sized frame. You can order the print at here.
The artwork is in a very small edition of 75, but only 60 copies will be made available in the Foetus Shoppe. The print sells for $75.00 plus flat postage and packaging fee of $15 in the US, $20 in Canada and $26 in the rest of the world. Since the print ships in a tube by itself, when ordering the print you cannot order other items in the same shipment. Other items (CDs, T-shirts, vinyl, tote bags, digital) must be ordered separately.

JG Thirlwell scores new animated series “Dicktown”

JG Thirlwell has scored the new animated short-form series Dicktown, which airs as part of the live-action/animated hybrid anthology TV series Cake! on FXX. The show premiered on July 9 2020. You can also see it streaming on Hulu.

Dicktown was created by John Hodgman and David Rees, who wrote and star in the series as themselves. Hodgman plays “a grown up boy detective and David is my former high school bully turned partner.” Hodgman is an author who is well known for his appearances on The Daily Show and elsewhere. The show was produced by Floyd County Productions.

Thirlwell produced and performed the noir score at his Self Immolation Studio in Brooklyn, with contributions from guest musicians Pete Moffett on drums and Simon Hanes on guitar.

JG Thirlwell on new Matmos album

JG Thirlwell has contributed to the new Matmos triple album, The Consuming Flame: Open Exercises in Group Form, which will be released on August 21 on Thrill Jockey. The album also features contributions by Oneohtrix Point Never, Mouse on Mars, clipping, Yo La Tengo, Max Tundra, Matthew Herbert, Jennifer Walshe, David Grubbs and many more. 99 musicians were asked to contribute something at 99bpm, and the results were expanded and folded into this sprawling album.

freq_wave rises

freq_wave: seven seas is a collaborative sound project unleashing 84 rogue sound artists for the Ocean.

Curated by Carl Michael von Hausswolff, co-curated by Alonso Alonso Vazquez and commissioned by TBA21-Academy, the project will gradually unfold on the online platform Ocean Archive.

freq_wave: seven seas will launch in seven editions oceanic trajectory featuring the work of 12 sound artists and artist groups united in a monster wave to bring oceanic creativity to the fore.
“freq_wave: seven seas” takes the form of a web-based mixer where you can manipulate your own version of the piece.

JG Thirlwell appears on the second edition of freq_wave.

JG Thirlwell & Simon Steensland Collaboration LP

The long-awaited collaboration between JG Thirlwell & Simon Steensland will be released by Ipecac Records on April 24 2020. Entitled Oscillospira the album will be available on CD, double LP and digitally.  JG Thirlwell and Simon Steensland’s collaboration first began in Stockholm in 2017 while Thirlwell was conducting his commission for the Great Learning Orchestra. Steensland happened to be sitting in with the orchestra, and Thirlwell was  a fan of with his work already. The extraordinary drummer Morgan Ågren (Mats/Morgan band, Frank Zappa, Devin Townsend etc) plays on all the tracks, bringing them to life in an explosive manner. The record also includes contributions from a variety of guest musicians playing oboe, bass clarinet, violin, voice and further sonic embellishments to enrich the album. Thirlwell creates music for Senstad installation in Estonia

JG Thirlwell has created a new exclusive sound composition to accompany a light installation by Anne Katrine Senstad. The installation is titled  Radical Light and is located at the new Kai Art Center in Tallinn, Estonia. Radical Light is a new monumental light environment installation on the boundless expansive experiences of perception and the potentials of space, light, and sound. It runs from Jan 26-April 26, 2020.
