JG Thirlwell performs at Roulette’s 40th Season benefit celebration

Roulette_509-Atlantic-Avenue_ExteriorJG Thirlwell is proud to announce that he will be performing at a special benefit concert to celebrate the end of Roulette’s 40th Season on July 21 2019. Thirlwell will be performing a new solo set with electronics, prepared piano and theremin in front of an immersive backdrop of new visuals created by Sten Backman. The bill  also includes John Zorn’s Simulacrum (featuring John Medeski, Matt Hollenberg and Kenny Grohowski) as well as a solo set by John Medeski plus Val Jeanty and Fay Victor.

The previous night of the two day festival will feature performances by Ikue Mori & Craig Taborn, Matana Roberts, Nels Cline with Zeena Parkins and the Sylvie Courvoisier Trio (with Drew Gress and Kenny Wollesen).

JG Thirlwell performs Lou Reed at Lincoln Center

On July 30 2016, Reed_by-Julian-Schnabel-and-courtesy-the-Lou-Reed-ArchiveJG Thirlwell will be performing the Lou Reed song “Men Of Good Fortune” at Lincoln Center Out Of Doors as part of an all-day celebration of Lou Reed curated by Laurie Anderson and Hal Willner entitled The Bells. Thirlwell will perform with a band comprised of Don Fleming (Gumball), Sal Maida (Roxy Music), Kenny Margolis, Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth) and Matt Sweeney (Chavez). Other guest singers performing in the same set include Joanaspolicewoman, David Johansen, Lenny Kaye, Jesse Malin, Kembra Pfahler, Felice Rosser, Harper Simon, Jon Spencer, Bush Tetras, JG Thirlwell, and Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls. The set begins at 11.30am.

The day will also include a Tai chi lesson with Master Ren GuangYi; Lou Reed DRONES: an immersive sound installation created from six of Lou Reed’s guitars and amps in a feedback loop; readings of Lou’s lyrics from Steve Buscemi, Willem Dafoe, Natasha Lyonne and many others; and a set of Lou’s love songs in the evening performed by the likes of Laurie Anderson, Anohni, Emily Haines, Mark Kozelek, Bill Laswell, Maxim Moston, Jenni Muldaur, Jane Scarpantoni, Jim White, John Zorn and many more.

The concert will take place in the Damrosch Park Bandshell on the grounds of Lincoln Center at Amsterdam Ave. and W. 62 St., New York, NY 10023 and admission is free.

JG Thirlwell pens new composition for Burroughs opera

10.16_experiments_in_opera_temp_imageJames Ilgenfritz has commissioned JG Thirlwell to compose a composition for an opera with the text based on William S. Burroughs cut ups of Clockwork Orange author Anthony Burgess. The piece will form part of a larger opera entitled The Travel Agency is on Fire, drawn from a book of Burroughs cut-up experiments, where he re-appropriates everyone from William Shakespeare and Arthur Rimbaud to William Wordsworth and James Joyce. The other composers contributing to the opera include Jason Cady, Natacha Diels, Anne Guthrie, James Ilgenfritz, Travis Just, Lukas Ligeti, Charlie Looker, Elliott Sharp, Aaron Siegel and Katie Young.  
The opera will premiere on October 16 2015 at John Zorn‘s club The Stone in NYC as part of James Ilgenfrtiz’s residency. It will be performed by the Anagram Ensemble, consisting of  Megan Schubert, Amirtha Kidambi, Nick Hallett and  Michael Douglas Jones (voices) PK Harris and Sarah Bernstein (violins), James Moore (guitar), Jonathan Singer (percussion), Brian Chase (drums), James Ilgenfritz (basses) and Nathan Koci (conductor)

JGT performs with Ken Jacobs at NYC Film-Makers Co-op benefit

1899_10151282911016671_74378234_nJG Thirlwell will be playing solo live in an electro-acoustic performance along to a live projection of Ken Jacobs‘ Nervous Magic Lantern Performance in a benefit for the NY FilmMaker’s Co-op. Along with JG, the featured performers will be Laurie Anderson, John Zorn and the Aleph Trio performing with Wallace Berman’s film Aleph, Nomi Ruiz, Transgendered Jesus and Zero Times Everything, performing with rare experimental & avant-garde films from the Coop’s collection. Meanwhile, a silent art auction will be available all night, including work by artists Jonas Mekas, Carolee Schneemann, Tom Otterness, Ken Jacobs, Peggy Ahwesh, Hal Hartley, Coleen Fitzgibbon, Bradley Eros, Richard Sylvarnes, Bill Brand, Molly Surno & many others.

Manorexia to perform at concert to benefit Japan Earthquake Relief

JG Thirlwell’s Manorexia will perform at Abrons Art Center in NYC on April 8 2011 in a concert to support recovery efforts in Japan. Organized by John Zorn, 100% of the money from the concert will be going to the Japan Society’s Earthquake Relief Fund. Tickets are on sale here. There will be two sets, with two separate admissions. Manorexia will be playing in the second set, which begins at 9.30pm.

Manorexia Record Release show in NYC April 4

JG Thirlwell’s Manorexia will be performing live at Le Poisson Rouge, celebrating the release of The Mesopelagic Waters on Tzadik. The show will be on April 4 2010 at 7pm and tickets are $15.00. This is the only Manorexia show scheduled for the US in 2010.

Manorexia: The Mesopelagic Waters released on Tzadik label

The new album from Manorexia is out now on John Zorn’s Tzadik label. Entitled The Mesopelagic Waters, the album is 50 minutes long and contains eight tracks, radically rearranged from the first two Manorexia albums. You can order the album here.
Mano_MesoIt is performed by the chamber ensemble version of Manorexia in the arrangements that JG has been performing and perfecting over the last couple of years. The album features the playing of David Cossin on percussion, Leyna Marika Papach on violin, Elena Moon Park on violin, Karen Waltuch on viola, Felix Fan on cello, David Broome on piano and JG Thirlwell on samples/keys, compositions.It was recorded and mixed at Eastside Studios in NYC and engineered by Marc Urselli.

Yet another Manorexia album will be released toward the end of 2010. As yet untitled, this studio album of all-new material will be released in stereo and 5:1 surround sound.

JG Thirlwell was a member of the choir in a piece by John Duncan on Nov 21 titled “A Fantastic World Superimposed on Reality: A Select History of Experimental Music”

A mini-festival of noise music curated by visual artist Mike Kelley.
